According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, a self-cleaning surface protects against bacteria by preventing the spread of harmful germs.
Multiple uses of the self-cleaning surface against bacteria
The plastic surface has numerous usages in various places as in hospitals and kitchens. People use plastic surfaces to cover tables, door handles, or vertical surfaces. Moreover, there is a new innovation protecting users against bacteria. This latter may cause many diseases such as Clostridium and Staphylococcus. This plastic surface is suitable for food packaging. Also, it helps prevent accidental transmission of bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Listeria.
Characteristics of the lotus flower
McMaster University engineers make use of the idea of coating that they learned from lotus flower; this latter works by repelling water from the leaves by coating. Similarly, creating tight microscopic wrinkles helps in the treatment of the plastic material. These small wrinkles prevent the adhesion of outer molecules.
When water or blood, for instance, falls on the surface of the material, they simply roll like raindrops along the surface. On a microscopic scale, scientists apply the same effect to very small molecules like bacteria; this means that protection against the accumulation of enough bacteria is possible.
The engineers said: “We apply this type of plastic material to meet different needs. This includes tables, door handles, and other personal usages”.
Self-cleaning surface: Chemically treated
Researchers have applied chemotherapy to the coating for the sake of boosting the capacity of its expulsion. It helps to create a complete, flexible, and easy-to-reproduce barrier.
In order to prove and show the capability of the new substance, researchers have tested this substance against the two following stubborn antibiotic-resistant bacteria, namely the bacterium and Staphylococcus aureus. This discovery was looked upon as a major concern of many researchers throughout the world because the discovery of the potential of this substance will be very important and needs as well in hospitals and nursing homes; these types of bacteria occasioned lung infection in people who are in constant touch with solid materials. Also, through electronic microscopy systems, researchers managed to verify the ability of the plastic surface to provide protection and prevent the transmission of bacterial infection when touching its surface.
Professor Dedar alludes to the fact that the “antimicrobial resistance crisis around the world” can be handled using this new technology as the only proven solution to fight these bacteria in the 21st century. Finally, the Self-cleaning surface protects against bacteria and keeps us away from future harm.
